Welcome to Vernal, Utah.
Vernal is a city in Uintah County, Utah, United States. The population was 7,714 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Uintah County. Vernal is located along Hwys. 191/40 in the northeast corner of Utah. It is southeast of the Uinta Mountains, 20 miles west of Dinosaur National Monument and 35 miles south of Flaming Gorge.

Vernal City purchased property downtown with the intent to build an urban park. A committee headed by council member JoAnn Cowan met with an architect to design the park. The Vernal City Council approved the plans in the fall of 2001. The park has the Cobble Rock archways that were a local feature at this site for many years. The park also has an amphitheater, fountains, and landscaping, making it a feature attraction for Old Towne Vernal.
Ashley Valley Community Park is the largest park in Vernal. It is located at 500 N. 900 W. right next to the Freestone Legacy Walking Park . Ashley Valley Community Park has a lot to offer including two large pavillions, four baseball diamonds, three softball diamonds, three sand volleyball pits, lighted horseshoe pits, two large playgrounds, and features a gazebo that was once the top of the old Vernal LDS Tabernacle. It was brought to the park when the tabernacle was converted into the Vernal LDS temple.
Vernal serves as a good base for visiting nearby Dinosaur National Monument, Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area and the Uinta Mountains. It offers a decent selection of motels and has numerous small restaurants, cafes and fast food joints. It also has a small, well-done prehistory museum, a couple of movie theaters and water slides for the kids.
Dinosaur National Monument has two identities. It was originally established as a national monument to protect an area that was one of the most productive sources of dinosaur bones in the world. This original area, the Quarry Area, contains a quarry with some 1,600 exposed bones from 11 different dinosaur species. Near the quarry are a short nature hike, a pleasant scenic drive, Indian petroglyphs, and the preserved cabin of a female homesteader.
Big, beautiful Flaming Gorge Lake, enclosed by brightly colored canyon walls and set amidst hundreds of thousands of acres of forested hills, makes up the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. It is a wonderful setting in which to boat, fish, hike, bike or just stare. The Green River below the dam provides some of the best trout fishing opportunities in the state as well as mild white water rafting.
